Description

Part II of my champion series. (watch for more! :D )

Lance is the champion of the combined leagues of Kanto and Johto, referred to as the Indigo League.  He is the heir to the Clan of Dragon Tamers and the dragon shrine located in Blackthorne city in Johto. He was raised there and his grandfather still runs the shrine while his cousin, Claire, is the gymleader of Blackthorne, her specialty type is also, naturally, dragon.

He is known to be a righteous man that will never fail to seek out justice and punish wrong-doers. As such he is very popular among the people. He also has a fond love of capes and is often seen purchasing many different kinds.

Lance trains three different dragonites. They happen to each hail from the three regions he overlooks as champion, Kanto, Johto, and the Sevii Islands. The Sevii islands dragonite is exceptionally rare and is not pictured here (I will draw one though for reference).

The dragonite to Lance’s right is a Kantoan dragonite. It is the breed that is most well-known, characterized by its sandy color and large body. the dragonite to Lance’s left is a Johtoan dragonite. Johtoan dragonites are darker brown with a spotted pattern. They are slightly shorter and have a section of fin running down their backs and covering more of their tail than their Kantoan counterparts. They are as such much more aquatic natured.

Dragonite is another “pseudo-legendary” pokemon, as it is exceptionally rare and difficult to raise, despite it being a very docile creature. They are amphibious pokemon that live in aquatic, mostly marine habitats.  They are highly intelligent, said to have intelligence that matches humans. (pokedex R/B/LG) it often is seen recuing people drowning or lost at sea and leading them to shore (pokedex  G/Ru/Sa/E/D/P/Pt/HG/B/W/2/Y) They can produce very loud calls using the vocal sacs in their nose (as demonstrated here by the kantoan dragonite) these calls can be heard for miles out at sea and can even be used like sonar underwater.

It can fly despite its bulky physique (pokedex FR/X) it does this by beating their wings upwards of 150 times a second. It has what are called asynchronous muscles which are the same type that exist in flying bug pokemon. Instead of the muscle contracting when a nerve fires it instead vibrates. This leads the the wings beating very quickly and producing an incredibly loud buzzing sound that sounds like a small jet engine when produced by a fully grown dragonite. These small fast wings also allow dragonite to fly unencumbered in storms, as the wind currents do not push it and its large body around as much. (pokedex S/SS) Despite this flight method initial take-offs are difficult and as such the dragonite developed very powerful legs with which it can leap great distances at Extreme Speeds. It using these legs to gain the initial momentum.

There also exists an island where only dragonites and their evolutionary lines live. (pokedex Chrystal) This island was in fact discovered by lance in the Sevii Islands, and as champion he placed it under government protection. No trainers or poachers are allowed near and the punishment is severe and issued by Lance himself.

Inspiration for dragonite came largely from frogs and salamanders with some bumblebee in there.

Don’t own pokemon :(

I really like this picture, mainly for the landscape. I can tell it's a wild place, hard to find and dangerous for the unwary. The ocean is high, looks like a storm's coming in or going and as my eye moves left, the three figures are present against the cliff.

(Of course, as a storyteller, I'm also interested in the Sevii Island Dragonite. . .and exactly who can visit the island, under what circumstances, and what the dragon-master would deem fair penalty for trespassing there.)

Thank you for piquing my curiosity about this particular world.
